Vibrators: How to Choose Your First One Without Wasting Money

Vibrators: How to Choose Your First One Without Wasting Money

By Claire Bennett

Almost every disappointing first vibrator was bought the same way: by reading the feature list. Twenty patterns, ten intensities, app enabled, waterproof, travel lock. None of that tells you what it will actually feel like, and one thing that is almost never on the box decides it.

Here is what to look at instead.

The short version

Buy external before internal. Pick rumbly over buzzy, which is about the motor and not the number of settings. Ignore the pattern count entirely, because you will use two of them. Get something quiet if you do not live alone, and get something rechargeable, because battery toys lose power as the battery drains and you will blame the toy. Body-safe silicone, always.

Rumbly or buzzy is the whole game

This is the one idea worth taking away, and hardly any product page mentions it.

A buzzy toy vibrates fast and shallow. You feel it on the surface, it tickles at first, and then the area goes numb after a few minutes. Cheap coin motors do this.

A rumbly toy vibrates slower and deeper. You feel it several millimetres in rather than on the skin. It does not numb you out, and most people who say a toy finally worked for them are describing a rumbly one.

You cannot read this off a spec sheet, but you can predict it. Larger motors rumble. Wands rumble. Small, slim, very cheap toys almost always buzz. If a toy is the size of a lipstick and costs less than lunch, expect buzz.

The five kinds, and who each is actually for

Type What it does Good first toy?
External or clitoral Sits against the skin, nothing goes inside Yes, the safest starting point
Air pulse or suction Pulses air rather than vibrating, feels completely different Yes, but it is a love it or hate it sensation
Wand Large motor, the most power available, broad contact Yes if you want power over portability
Internal or G-spot Curved, firm, works with pressure rather than buzz Better as a second toy
Rabbit or dual Internal and external at once Only if you already know both work for you

Why external first, nearly always

Most people who can orgasm do it from external stimulation. Starting there removes every variable at once: nothing to insert, no size question, no lubricant learning curve, no anatomy guesswork. It is also the cheapest way to find out what intensity you actually like, which is the information you need before spending more.

Buying a rabbit as a first toy is the single most common expensive mistake in this category. It is two toys fused together, and if either half is wrong for you, the whole thing goes in a drawer.

Air pulse is not a vibrator, and that matters

Air pulse toys do not vibrate against you. They sit over the clitoris and pulse air in a sealed pocket, which produces a sucking or tapping sensation that vibration cannot copy.

People tend to have a strong reaction in one direction. For some it is dramatically more effective than any vibrator and works in under a minute. For others it feels too intense or too specific and they go back to vibration. There is no way to know which you are without trying one, so treat it as its own category rather than as an upgrade.

What actually matters on the spec sheet

  • Rechargeable, not AA. Battery toys weaken as the battery drains, so the toy that felt strong in week one feels flat in week four and you assume you got bored.
  • Fully waterproof, not splashproof. Waterproof means you can wash it properly under running water. Splashproof means you cannot, which becomes a hygiene problem rather than a bath question.
  • Noise. If you share walls, this decides whether you use it. Air pulse toys are generally quieter than wands. Anything described as powerful is not silent.
  • Silicone, glass or steel. Non-porous materials can actually be cleaned. Everything else has a short life, which we cover in when to replace a sex toy.
  • A travel lock, if it will ever go in a bag. Otherwise you will find out the hard way at an airport.

What does not matter

Pattern count. Nobody uses twenty patterns. Almost everyone finds one steady intensity they like and stays there, and the escalating pulse modes mostly interrupt exactly what was working.

App control, for a first toy. It is genuinely good for distance and for handing someone else the controls, and it is a slower way to do what a button does instantly for everything else. What it knows about you is worth understanding too, which is covered here.

Colour, shape and how it photographs. It is going to live in a drawer.

The part a retailer usually leaves out

Your first vibrator is a guess. Not a failure of research, a guess, because nobody can tell you in advance how your body responds to a sensation you have not felt.

So buy the cheapest thing that meets the quality bar rather than the most impressive thing you can afford. An entry level toy from a real brand tells you what you like. Learning that on an expensive one costs the same lesson and a lot more money. The people with a good collection did not get it right first time. They got it right third time, and the first two were cheap.

Getting the most out of whatever you buy

Use lubricant even for external use. It is the difference between a pleasant fifteen minutes and friction that makes you stop, and it costs almost nothing. Water based works with every material, which silicone lubricant does not.

Give it more than one try. First attempts are usually spent working out how to hold the thing.

And do not chase the strongest setting. Most people land somewhere in the lower middle of the range, and starting at maximum tends to numb rather than help.

Where to start

The Vibrators range is where the external toys, wands and air pulse options live, and there is something in it at every level rather than only at the top. Pair whatever you pick with a water based lubricant in the same order.

If you would rather not compare twenty things, Help Me Choose asks two questions and hands you a short list. And if you are buying this with someone else in mind, how to bring it up without making it weird is worth five minutes first.
